CAF has delayed the TotalEnergies CHAN tournament, which was previously scheduled for Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The tournament’s new date is August 2025. The 19-team event was initially scheduled for February 1 to February 28.
A CAF inspection deemed the three host countries unfit to host the competition because they had insufficient infrastructure—stadiums, training sites, and hospitals.
CAF postponed the tournament until August 2025 to give nations time to upgrade their facilities.
Dr Patrice Motsepe, CAF President, confirmed the 2024 tournament’s August commencement, pending the completion of ongoing facility upgrades in the three host countries.
“l am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda,” Dr Motsepe said.
“I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure and facilities will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (“CHAN”) Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024,” he added.
Of the three host nations, Kenya is forced to play its international football matches abroad since it lacks stadiums that meet CAF standards.
Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, all 2027 AFCON hosts, will use the 2025 CHAN tournament as a test event.
The postponed CHAN tournament draw will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday, January 15.
