AFCON 2025: Morocco advances to quarterfinals with Brahim Diaz goal against Tanzania.

Morocco edged out Tanzania 1-0 in Rabat on Sunday, thanks to Brahim Diaz’s second-half goal, earning them a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

After a difficult evening, the hosts finally broke the deadlock, despite dominating possession against a Tanzanian team determined to keep their run going.

Morocco, led by Achraf Hakimi for the first time, dominated early but couldn’t score. Tanzania defended effectively and kept the Atlas Lions from penetrating.

Midway through the first half, Ismail Saibari’s goal for the home team was disallowed after a VAR check. Morocco’s frustration was evident as the first period ended without a goal.

After the restart, Walid Regragui’s team was more focused. Brahim Diaz made an immediate impact. His header led to a corner, then Bilal El Khannouss’ shot narrowly missed in the 52nd minute as Morocco’s pressure increased.

The hosts were nearly stunned by Tanzania, which played unexpectedly well. In the 56th minute, Feisal Toto missed an easy chance.

Morocco scored the winning goal just after the hour mark, cheered on by a full stadium. Diaz scored a superb goal in the 63rd minute, finding the net from a tight angle to spark joy among the fans.

Diaz’s fourth goal of the tournament moved him ahead in the scoring race, reinforcing his key role in Morocco’s title hopes.

The hosts couldn’t extend their advantage despite pressure and opportunities. Tanzania played well, but Morocco’s defense held on to secure the win.
