Tai Baribo converted a penalty deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic 2–1 win for D.C. United over Chicago Fire FC on Saturday night.
Baribo struck in the fifth minute of 18 minutes of second-half stoppage time, completing a late comeback after Hugo Cuypers had briefly put Chicago ahead with a penalty.
The match remained goalless until the 81st minute when Cuypers converted from the spot following a foul on D.C. United midfielder Jackson Hopkins.
However, the Fire’s lead lasted only three minutes as defender Matti Peltola fired home from the center of the box through a crowded area to score his first career goal in his 61st appearance.
Baribo then sealed the victory with a late penalty after Chicago defender Jonathan Dean committed a foul. The goal was his third in four matches since joining the club, following a spell with the Philadelphia Union.
Goalkeeper Sean Johnson made one save for D.C. United in his 435th career start, while Chris Brady recorded one save for Chicago, who entered the match on the back of two consecutive clean sheets.
Baribo had earlier seen a goal ruled out in the 43rd minute after Hopkins was flagged offside.
