CONCACAF Champs Cup: LA Galaxy ties the first game in Panama after Joseph Paintsil scores to even the match

Joseph Paintsil of LA Galaxy scored in the 68th minute, securing a 1-1 draw with Sporting San Miguelito in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup first-round series in Penonomé, Panama.

Rodrigo Tello scored the first goal for the hosts in the 37th minute. Unmarked on the left of the box, Tello met Valencia’s cross with a looping header that went over the Galaxy keeper and into the far corner.

Sporting San Miguelito took a deserved lead just before halftime with this goal.

After halftime, Paintsil intensified his efforts. The Ghanaian winger consistently threatened the defense, using his speed to stretch the field, apply pressure, and force turnovers in key areas.

His persistence paid off midway through the second half. Paintsil collected a loose ball in the box and calmly scored the equalizer, a goal that could prove crucial ahead of the second leg in Carson.

This result gives LA Galaxy a slight advantage heading into the decisive home match, where they will compete for a place in the next round.

For Paintsil, the match held significance beyond club ambitions. With Ghana set to face Panama in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Paintsil’s experience against Panamanian teams could offer valuable insights into their style of play and tactics.

Attention now turns to the home match, where Paintsil is expected to play a key role in Galaxy’s pursuit of advancement.
