Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has set the record straight, revealing that Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is owed just half his salary, not the full nine months as rumored.
While some reports claimed Addo was missing out on his entire $50,000 monthly wage, Adams clarified that half of that sum had already been paid at the year’s outset, as per the contract.
During an interview on Channel One Sports, Adams admitted that several national team coaches are still awaiting payments but assured that the government is actively working to simplify and speed up the process.
“Before I became minister, some of these coaches, especially the expatriate coaches of the women’s national team, were paid from sponsorship funds.
“That has since changed now, all that has been offloaded onto the government, and so we have submitted the details. The Finance Minister has since approved the payments, and the payments, even per the contract, are supposed to be in arrears,” Adams said.
He pointed out that Addo’s contract specifically provides for half of his annual salary to be paid in advance.
“For the head coach [of the Black Stars], we pay him 50% ahead of time. So, at the beginning of the year, 50% of his salary was paid ahead. So, what he is owed is actually 50%, not the full salary,” he added.
