Following two clean sheets in World Cup qualifying matches, Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has been named Ghana’s starting goalkeeper by coach Otto Addo.
Making his debut in March, the 32-year-old goalkeeper impressed with a clean sheet during Ghana’s commanding 5-0 win against Chad at Accra Sports Stadium on March 21st.
Asare kept his place for Monday’s 3-0 win against Madagascar, maintaining a clean sheet and extending Ghana’s Group I lead to 15 points.
In a post-match interview with 3Sports, Otto Addo lauded Asare’s displays, confirming his top spot in the Ghana squad.
“I think the next game is in June, and he is already the number one. We made that decision for him. He trained very well. We have a good atmosphere where the keepers push each other,” Addo asserted.
Besides Asare’s promotion, Addo praised the players’ positive competition, highlighting Zigi and Wollacott’s efforts.
“I’m very grateful for how Ati Zigi and Wollacott behaved this week and how they tried to probe Benjamin, help him, and guide him. I don’t take it for granted. Big credit to them. Asare was worth it. I’m glad for him.”
Ghana is back on track to qualify for the World Cup.
Next month’s World Cup qualifier will be a big test for Asare, who aims to maintain his intense performances and establish himself as Ghana’s top goalkeeper for the Black Stars.
