Black Stars coaching vacancy attracts 600+ applicants amid GFA selection drive

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has attracted overwhelming interest in the vacant Black Stars head coach role, receiving more than 600 applications after Otto Addo was sacked.

GFA President Kurt Okraku confirmed the figure, describing it as evidence of the prestige associated with managing one of Africa’s leading national teams.

“Over 600 applications have come in for the Black Stars coaching position,” Okraku revealed in an interview with 3Sports.

The role became available after Addo was dismissed due to a run of disappointing performances, including losses to Austria and Germany, a decision that was reportedly taken late at night in Stuttgart.

The high volume of applications underlines both the attractiveness of the position and the pressure on Ghana to quickly regroup ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The FA is expected to begin an extensive vetting process to narrow down the list of candidates, with interest coming from both domestic and international coaches.

Okraku has suggested that the appointment of a new head coach could be finalized within one to two weeks as the association seeks to maintain momentum in its preparations.

Ghana are set to play friendly matches against Mexico and Wales before the World Cup, where they will compete in a group featuring Panama, Croatia and England.

The upcoming appointment is viewed as a pivotal one, with the FA aiming to secure a coach who can deliver short-term results while laying a strong foundation for the future of the Black Stars.
