Ipswich Town have signed Ghana international Abdul Fatawu from Leicester City. The 22-year-old winger has agreed to a five-year contract, keeping him at Portman Road until summer 2031.
The transfer fee has not been disclosed.
Fatawu joins following a strong season and recent participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he played in all four of Ghana’s matches, including the group-stage game against England. He has earned 32 senior caps and scored three goals for Ghana.
Fatawu has played in the UEFA Champions League with Sporting CP and contributed to Leicester City’s promotion to the Premier League. In the 2025/26 season, he scored nine goals in 44 appearances for Leicester.
He will now join his new teammates at Ipswich’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain.
After completing the move, Fatawu expressed enthusiasm for the club’s ambitions.
“I am proud to have signed for Ipswich Town.
“The ambition the club has is very exciting, and I’m looking forward to being a part of that as we prepare for the Premier League season. After speaking to the manager, Gary O’Neil, I know what the expectations are, and I’m excited to meet my teammates and get started.
“I’ve played against Ipswich a few times during my time in England, and I know how passionate the supporters are, so I’m looking forward to playing for them and showing what I can do.”
Ipswich manager Gary O’Neil believes Fatawu will bring a new dimension to the squad.
“Abdul is a young player who has already gained valuable experience, and we’re delighted to have him with us.
“He has excellent physical and technical qualities, is comfortable in possession, and has the ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations. He gives us another exciting attacking option.
“After representing Ghana at the World Cup this summer, I’m sure he’s eager to get back to work ahead of the new Premier League season.”
Born in Tamale, Ghana, Fatawu began his career with Steadfast FC and spent time on loan at Dreams FC in 2021. His performances led to a transfer to Sporting CP, where he gained European experience, including UEFA Champions League appearances.
He joined Leicester City on loan for the 2023/24 season, playing a key role in their Championship-winning campaign and earning the club’s Young Player of the Year award. Although injuries limited his appearances in 2024/25, he returned strongly last season, scoring nine goals in all competitions.
Internationally, Fatawu was named Player of the Tournament as Ghana won the 2021 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. He made his senior debut later that year and has since represented Ghana at both the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, featuring in every match of the latter tournament.
