Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams introduced the Sports Fund Bill to Parliament, paving the way for structured sports funding in Ghana.
After his ministerial confirmation, the Buem Constituency MP vowed to support the Bill, highlighting its ability to “accelerate national sports growth.”
Adams discussed sports’ funding issues in Parliament on December 11.
“Over the years, it’s pretty clear this House has faced funding issues in sports. Funding is mostly secured to support just football, when indeed, when we talk about sports, it goes beyond football,” he said.
The Minister noted that previous attempts to secure lasting sports funding had not been successful.
“There have been many attempts to put together a funding system that will enable the Ministry [Sports and Recreation] execute its programme by bringing on board many more sporting disciplines and supporting them,” he said.
Adams was hopeful the Sports Fund would solve these long-term issues.
“When approved, we will not have the challenges of funding our sports, and sports will grow to bring about development and support other progressive activities that we do in this country,” he added.
Ghanaian athletes, aside from footballers, have competed internationally for many years, sustained by inconsistent donations and scarce sponsorships. The Minister feels the Bill will provide financial support for national sports.
