Minister of Sports and Recreation forms boxing normalization committee ahead of inauguration

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, met with several members of the newly formed Boxing Normalisation Committee in the Ministry’s conference room on September 26, 2025.
Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), chaired the meeting before the committee’s official launch on September 29, 2025.
After Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju died in Accra’s Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29, 2025, they formed the Boxing Normalisation Committee.
The Minister then appointed an independent investigative committee, led by Rtd. Amarkai Amarteifio will investigate the circumstances of the death, as well as broader issues in Ghana’s professional boxing scene.
The committee presented a comprehensive report outlining its findings and recommendations for improving the sport.
In his address to the new committee, the Minister praised them for taking on the job, recognizing the need for immediate reforms.
“This normalization process is not about personalities; it is about the future of our sport. We are determined to restore boxing to a state of professionalism, safety, and international respect,” he stated.
He highlighted the need for prompt medical protocols, updating boxer health records, establishing the Medical Commission, and enhancing doping controls in collaboration with NADA.
He also told the committee to be swift, honest, and impartial to fix the sport, and he hoped boxing could return by year’s end.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation released a white paper stating its official position on the investigative report.
The Ministry’s Conference Room will host the official inauguration of the Boxing Normalisation Committee at 1:00 PM on Monday, September 29, 2025.
