Since my departure as assistant, Black Stars have slumped – George Boateng

Ghana’s football struggles have worsened since George Boateng, a former Black Stars assistant coach, left, he claims.
In a Soccer Africa interview, Boateng blamed the team’s recent poor performance on inconsistency, highlighting its importance to the national team’s success.
“I’m a firm believer in continuity. I said straight after the tournament [2023 AFCON] and in the media that the federation has to analyze it as disappointing as it is. “
Following Ghana’s 2023 AFCON campaign, the 49-year-old Dutch technical staff member believes the GFA inadequately analyzed and rectified the team’s errors.
“You have to go in-depth to see where the mistakes were in management, players, and staff, and then replace those who were not competent enough, whether they were a playing body, staff member, or technical staff. And then you rebuild on that, but I’m unsure if that was done after the African Cup of Nations.”
Ghana’s 2023 AFCON campaign ended in bitter disappointment. They threw away a two-goal lead, drawing the match and exiting the group stage. The team’s second straight group stage exit prompted criticism, with the GFA’s dismissal of Boateng and the coaching staff viewed as an impulsive response.
Boateng’s statement about the team’s worsening decline after his departure is hard to challenge.
“You can see that after I left, we’ve now had a bigger slide because at least when I was there, we qualified, and we were unlucky not to get out of the group stage.”
The Ghanaian national football team is in a slump and is having difficulty. For the first time in 20 years, Ghana missed AFCON after a disastrous qualifying run; they didn’t win a match and ended up bottom of their group.
Supporters of the Black Stars hope the GFA will consider Boateng’s advice and maintain consistency to improve the team.
“You can’t keep switching coaches and expect different outcomes,” as the saying goes.
Since 2018, Ghana’s football team has cycled through five different coaches, failing to meet expectations, creating persistent underperformance and instability.
Otto Addo’s continued role as head coach leaves the GFA’s approach uncertain: will they prioritize consistency like Boateng or continue their decline in African football? Time alone will determine the outcome.
