Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has extended his contract for one year.
Despite City’s silence on the story, multiple sources confirm Guardiola has agreed to a new deal extending his stay at the club to ten years.
The Spaniard, now 53, has amassed 18 trophies since 2016 while at City, including six Premier League titles.
His contract expires at the end of the present season. While the agreement suggests a second-year option, it’s not yet confirmed.
Under Guardiola’s leadership, Manchester City achieved a historic Treble, becoming only the second English men’s team to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League in one season.
They’ve made history as the first men’s team to win four consecutive English top-flight championships and reach 100 Premier League points in one season.
Currently occupying second place in the Premier League, the City is five points behind Liverpool’s leaders. Unfortunately, they are also experiencing a tough streak, having lost their last four matches across all competitions.
In his entire managerial career, Guardiola has never endured a string of losses as long as this one, excluding penalty shootouts.
In the wake of their 2-1 defeat against Brighton, he stated: “Maybe after seven years of winning six Premier Leagues, another team deserves it this year.”
Guardiola renewed his contract in May 2018, November 2020, and November 2022.
Guardiola hinted at a potential departure in May following City’s unprecedented fourth consecutive league championship.
Upon hearing Begiristain’s announcement of his departure at the end of the season, Guardiola admitted to feeling a pang of sadness.
Regarding a contract extension, Guardiola, who previously managed Barcelona and Bayern Munich, stated his need for strong conviction that it would be “the best for the club.”
Some have linked the team’s recent struggles to the uncertainty over Guardiola’s future.
The Premier League’s disciplinary case against City, involving 115 charges that the club denies, has no set timeline for a decision. If found guilty, City could face significant punishment. Guardiola has been a staunch defender of the club, asking critics to wait for the final verdict before making accusations.
