Black Queens coach Kim Bjorkegren forecasts WAFCON title

The Black Queens’ head coach, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, wants to win the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Swedish coach assumed leadership of the senior national women’s team two months ago and has already organized three friendly matches: one loss against Morocco and Senegal and one win against Senegal.
The ex-Racing Louisville manager is evaluating a 31-player squad (24 from Ghana’s top women’s league) at Ghana’s Soccer Centre of Excellence for the upcoming FIFA international break. Kim Lars explains the purpose of his third training camp to 3Sports.
“It’s not feasible for me to see all the players in Ghana. Being here allows me to watch a game at 3 p.m. Without more games, I won’t get to see every player. This was a fantastic opportunity to get to know many players, both on and off the field.”
The Black Queens will be returning to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, having missed the 2022 edition. Group C will see them face defending champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali in their first challenge. The manager believes they will win, bringing trophies and gold medals back to Ghana.
“For me, winning the gold medal is simple. You need to take it step by step, and I know we will not be a favorite for people outside of Ghana. There are some five nations who have a bigger chance of winning it. We need to qualify from the group stage. It’s three games from there, and I know we can do it.”
The Black Queens’ most recent podium finish at the Women’s AFCON was in 2016 when they secured third place with a 1-0 victory over South Africa.
