Maxwell Konadu looks back on his South African journey

Reflecting on his time in South Africa, former Asante Kotoko and Black Stars’ assistant coach Maxwell Konadu described his short tenure with Black Leopards as a valuable lesson.
After coaching Kotoko, Legon Cities, and Nsoatreman FC in Ghana’s Premier League—including leading Nsoatreman FC to the MTN FA Cup championship—Konadu ventured abroad, inking a three-year deal with Black Leopards in July 2024. Unfortunately, his time there was shortened to only 17 games.
Konadu told Akoma FM about his reasons for accepting the challenge, having previously refused South African clubs.
“I had an opportunity two years ago, but things didn’t work out. So I chose to stay and coach Nsoatreman. A year later, Black Leopards approached me again, and I decided to take on the challenge, not for the financial incentives but to explore the South African market and their style of play. It was a great learning experience, and I consider it a success.”
Although Black Leopards initially rose to second place, inconsistent play hampered their success. After a 6-17 win-loss record, Konadu and the club agreed to separate.
“We started the season well, worked extremely hard, and at one point, we were second on the table. But after drawing three consecutive home games, doubts began to creep in. Management grew impatient, and we mutually agreed to part ways. I left on good terms, believing it was the best decision for both parties.”
Konadu is now back in Ghana, carefully considering his next step without feeling pressured.
“I’ve had conversations with teams outside Ghana, but with the season ending soon, I prefer to wait and make the right choice. Some clubs have reached out, but I want to take my time before deciding my next step.”
Konadu’s potential return to coaching, domestically or internationally, is imminent as the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season nears its end.
