Black Stars’ subpar performances have drawn a response from Kwesi Nyantakyi, the GFA’s former president.
The senior national team’s performances have been shocking. Ghana has recorded a win out of nine games in the last three international tournaments.
Surprisingly, the four-time African champions failed to advance past the group stage of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghana won one match in the 2022 Qatar World Cup but finished last in their group, exiting at the group stage.
At the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, Ghana’s winless group stage performance resulted in their elimination.
The Black Stars’ struggles worsened after missing qualification for the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco.
With six games played, all ending in either a draw or a loss (three of each), Ghana’s two-decade tournament streak has come to an end.
Regarding the Black Stars’ subpar performances, former FIFA Executive Council member Nyantakyi believes this steep decline is abnormal.
“Black Stars challenges are not normal,” he told Kumasi-based Lawson FM.
“Maybe when I was in charge, I was doing things differently. If you look at the coaches who coached the Black Stars, it is not the same as today,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars will hope for a better showing against Chad and Madagascar during their March 2025 and 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
