Carlo Ancelotti departs Real Madrid at the end of the season

Carlo Ancelotti and Real Madrid have mutually agreed on his departure.
As reported by The Athletic on April 27, Ancelotti’s move to become Brazil’s head coach on a one-year deal until the 2026 World Cup was anticipated.
Madrid and the player have been in talks regarding his exit, primarily focused on settling his remaining year’s salary. The 65-year-old signed a contract extension in December 2023, valid until 2026.
Ancelotti’s departure is expected to be officially announced before the league season ends, following a verbal agreement and pending administrative procedures. We might see that as early as the Sunday after the Barcelona Clasico.
To lead the team at the Club World Cup, Madrid must choose between Xabi Alonso (external) and internal options such as Santiago Solari, whom the club prefers to Raul Gonzalez and Alvaro Arbeloa.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) calls Ancelotti “the president’s (Ednaldo Rodrigues’) dream,” and negotiations between them have been ongoing since March.
CBF officials expected him to sign his Brazilian contract on April 28 in London, but the transfer was later delayed. Ancelotti had to settle his situation with Madrid before committing to Brazil. Officials expect this to be resolved soon, allowing him to be ready for June’s World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay.
In addition to Brazil, the Italian had other offers, specifically concrete interest from Saudi Arabian clubs and the possibility of a non-coaching position at Madrid, as per his extended 2023 contract.
Madrid’s top choice to succeed Ancelotti is Alonso, who coaches Bayer Leverkusen.
Following Dorival Junior’s March dismissal after 14 months, the five-time Champions League winner is to take over as Brazil’s manager. Al Hilal’s Jorge Jesus was also considered for the CBF’s head coach position.
Across two stints at Real Madrid, Ancelotti, who returned in 2021, boasts two La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns. Madrid wants his farewell to reflect his record of 15 titles, making him the club’s most decorated coach.
Real Madrid’s Champions League run ended in the quarterfinals against Arsenal. They also lost the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona in extra time last month and are four points behind the La Liga leader with four matches remaining. Barcelona will host Madrid for the final Clasico of the season on Sunday.
