Paris St-Germain has completed the acquisition of Joao Neves, the midfielder from Benfica, in a deal that could reach up to £60m. The 19-year-old Portuguese international, previously linked with Manchester United, has committed to a five-year contract with the reigning French champions.
Neves joined Benfica’s first team in January of last year and quickly became a pivotal player for his childhood club. He made 75 appearances across all competitions and scored four goals.
Benfica disclosed that the initial transfer fee was £50m but could rise to £60m with additional bonuses.
Neves joins PSG as the club looks to move forward after star forward Kylian Mbappe’s summer departure to Real Madrid.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi remarked, “Joao is one of the most talented players in Portugal and internationally. He displayed immense passion for joining Paris St-Germain and was determined to fight for the jersey, which is what we expect from all our players.”
Having earned nine caps for Portugal, Neves also made two appearances for his country in this summer’s European Championship held in Germany, contributing to their journey to the quarter-finals.
“I am incredibly proud to be joining Paris St-Germain, an extremely ambitious club,” Neves expressed. “I am fully committed to supporting my teammates, evolving at this fantastic club, and winning numerous titles.”
