Kasper Hjulmand replaced Erik ten Hag as the new head coach of Bayer Leverkusen after the team fired Erik ten Hag last week, just two games into the new season.
The ex-Denmark manager has agreed to a deal with the Bundesliga team through summer 2027.
Hjulmand, 53, notably guided Denmark to the Euro 2020 semi-finals (played in 2021), where England narrowly defeated them in extra time.
“It’s an honour to be entrusted with such a team,” Hjulmand said. “I’m highly motivated to help shape the future of Bayer Leverkusen, working with both established players and exciting new talent.”
The club’s turbulent period ends with his appointment; it included the September 1st sacking of Erik ten Hag after a brief and disappointing time.
Xabi Alonso, after winning Leverkusen an undefeated domestic double in 2023–24, and the club’s first Bundesliga title, was succeeded by Ten Hag. Alonso then went to Real Madrid.
Simon Rolfes said that hiring Ten Hag was a mistake, but that keeping him would have been a worse error.
Leverkusen’s season got off to a bad start, as they are 12th in the table with one point from two games, after finishing second last season.
Leverkusen expects Hjulmand, who also secured the Danish Superliga title with Nordsjaelland in 2011–12, to be in charge of their Friday home game against Eintracht Frankfurt.
