Spurs captain Romero sidelined for season

Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero will likely miss the rest of the season after hurting his knee in their 1-0 loss to Sunderland.

The 27-year-old defender looked upset as he limped off the field after colliding with goalkeeper Antonín Kinský during Sunday’s Premier League match at the Stadium of Light.

Doctors have confirmed the injury is serious. Tests show he has a high-grade partial tear in his medial cruciate ligament, which will keep him out for up to eight weeks and end his season.

Romero’s injury also puts his chances of playing for Argentina in this summer’s 2026 FIFA World Cup in doubt.

His absence is a big setback for head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who is trying to keep Spurs out of the relegation zone. De Zerbi called Romero a “good player with a big personality” and an important part of the team.

Tottenham are currently 18th in the Premier League, two points behind West Ham United, who hold the last safe spot above the relegation zone.
