Season over for Arsenal defender Gabriel due to injury

Arsenal’s Gabriel will undergo hamstring surgery and is out for the season, the club announced.

During Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Fulham on Tuesday at the Emirates, a Brazilian player was replaced in the first half.

Having started 28 of Arsenal’s 30 Premier League games this season, the ex-Lille defender has been key to their league-best defense, conceding only 25 goals.

The 27-year-old player, according to Arsenal, is targeting a first-team return for the start of next season.

“Gabi will undergo a surgical repair procedure to his hamstring in the coming days, and immediately begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme, with the aim to be ready for the start of next season,” the club said.

Eight matches remain in the Premier League season, and Arsenal are second, trailing Liverpool by 12 points.

Real Madrid, the defending champions, will face Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.
