Liverpool has reached out to Professional Game Match Officials Limited to express their worries about the disallowed goal by Virgil van Dijk in the 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday.
A VAR check confirmed that Van Dijk scored a header to tie the game at 1-1, but they disallowed the goal.
VAR ruled Robertson offside, as he was ahead of Donnarumma and hindered the goalie’s view.
Nonetheless, the Anfield club believes the referee shouldn’t have disallowed the Liverpool captain’s goal.
Liverpool dismisses the idea that Robertson’s positioning affected Donnarumma’s vision, based on video evidence.
The Reds are also puzzled as to why the goal wasn’t given, despite Michael Oliver overseeing VAR.
Liverpool acknowledges the game’s result, yet they contacted Howard Webb to express concern, believing the incident warrants scrutiny.
The wording of the relevant Law 11 stipulates a player in an offside position is only penalised on becoming active by: “interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or interfering with an opponent by preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or challenging an opponent for the ball or clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball.”
