South Africa wants to host the 2036 Summer Olympics. If chosen, it would be the first African country to hold the Games, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
South Africa is one of seven countries considering a bid. Hungary, India, Qatar, and Turkey also hope to host the Summer Games for the first time. Germany and South Korea, which have hosted before, are also interested.
The IOC said all seven countries are in ongoing talks. Formal bids must be submitted by October 31.
Countries interested in hosting will give online presentations to the IOC’s Future Host Commission in November. Feasibility studies should be finished by March 2027. After that, each country’s Olympic committee will have more detailed talks with the IOC.
South Africa’s plan would hold events in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg. Durban was chosen to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but those plans were canceled in 2017.
India’s bid focuses on Ahmedabad. The city is also getting ready to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and has applied to host the 2038 Asian Games.
Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, which can seat about 132,000 people, has hosted four of the last five Indian Premier League cricket finals.
Hungary and Qatar have proposed their capitals, Budapest and Doha, as host cities.
