Carlos Queiroz has reportedly been shown the door as Ghana head coach after a disastrous start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which saw the Black Stars stumble to back-to-back defeats.
Ghana, who have won the African Cup four times, lost 2-0 to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24. Five days later, they gave up a two-goal lead and lost 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Ernest Nuamah scored a penalty, and Felix Afena-Gyan added a free-kick to give Ghana the lead against The Gambia. But The Gambia tied the game before halftime and scored two more goals after the break to win.
These setbacks left Ghana empty-handed after their opening two Group C matches, turning up the heat on Queiroz.
Earlier, the Portuguese coach led Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ghana beat Panama 1-0, drew 0-0 with England, and lost 2-1 to Croatia. Their run ended with a 1-0 loss to Colombia in the Round of 32.
Although Ghana made it out of the group, their attacking struggles showed in their exit. CAF pointed out that they struggled to create good chances against Colombia, who won with a goal from Jhon Arias in the 14th minute.
The recent losses in AFCON qualifying added more pressure on Queiroz.
After losing to The Gambia, Queiroz said the Ghana Football Association would decide whether he would stay as coach.
With Queiroz reportedly leaving, the Ghana Football Association now faces an important decision as the team tries to bounce back from a poor start.
After losing their first two matches, the Black Stars need to perform well in their remaining Group C games to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 tournament alive.
