For the first time in 51 years, Ghana let in three or more goals in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The Gambia came from behind, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat the Black Stars 4-2.
Tuesday’s loss at the Accra Sports Stadium broke a streak that had lasted since April 1975, when Ghana lost 3-1 to Mali in Bamako during the 1976 qualifiers.
The Black Stars seemed on track to earn their first points of the campaign after going up 2-0, but The Gambia fought back and scored four goals to win.
This defeat added to the challenges for Carlos Queiroz’s team, who started their 2027 AFCON qualifiers with a 2-0 loss to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké.
After conceding six goals and earning no points from two matches, Ghana stays at the bottom of Group C.
These back-to-back defeats put more pressure on the Black Stars to improve, making their remaining games vital if they want to qualify for the 2027 tournament.
