Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has urged his players to focus on qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) before thinking about winning the tournament.
Ghana last won the continental title in 1982, although they reached the final in 1992, 2010, and 2015.
In recent years, the four-time African champions have faced more disappointment, exiting at the group stage in their last two AFCON appearances and missing out on qualification for the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
As Ghana prepares to start its 2027 qualifying campaign later this month, Queiroz says the team needs to balance ambition with humility and stay focused on the task ahead.
“We must have ambition, but also humility,” he told the Ghana FA website.
“We know our recent history, and we cannot talk about winning AFCON when we have not yet qualified.
“We have to work, grow, compete and earn our destiny.”
Ghana will start their Group C campaign against Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on September 24. Three days later, they will play The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars will finish the international window with a friendly against Morocco at the Grand Stade de Tanger on October 4.
Queiroz and his players have already started camp in Accra as preparations pick up. The Portuguese coach is focused on building a strong foundation for Ghana’s qualification campaign.
