Cristian Romero has admitted he was “not perfect” during his five-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur as he prepares to complete a £34.2 million move to Atletico Madrid.
The 28-year-old Argentine defender leaves Spurs after making 156 appearances since joining from Atalanta in 2021. His final match for the club came in April against Sunderland, when a knee injury forced him off in tears and sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
Romero drew criticism from some supporters after planning a trip to Argentina while Tottenham battled relegation. However, he returned to England in time to witness the club’s decisive 1-0 victory over Everton, which secured Premier League survival and a 17th-place finish.
In a farewell message, Romero acknowledged his imperfections but stressed his commitment to the club.
“I know I wasn’t perfect, but I always gave everything. I wore this shirt with pride and gave my heart to the club.”
His most memorable achievement at Tottenham came in 2025, when he helped end the club’s 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League with victory over Manchester United.
Reflecting on his departure, Romero said he had always dreamed of leaving his mark on the club and was proud to have helped bring silverware back to Spurs.
“I’m leaving, but part of my heart will always stay here. Thank you for everything.”
