Ghana miss out on gold as 2026 African Athletics Championships conclude in Accra

Ghana wrapped up the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra without a single gold medal, leaving the host nation still searching for that elusive top spot on home soil.

The national anthem was not heard throughout the championship, which took place from May 12 to May 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon.

Ghana’s athletes delivered strong performances and brought home a collection of silver and bronze medals, but the golden moment they chased remained just out of reach.

With Africa’s finest athletes converging in Accra, hopes soared for Ghana to shine as hosts of this prestigious biennial event.

Though gold proved elusive, officials praised the athletes’ unwavering determination and urged them to build on this experience as a stepping  stone toward future international triumphs.

The tournament offered Ghanaian athletes invaluable experience, testing their skills against the continent’s elite at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Now, Ghana is focused on the next regional and global contests, aiming to move from podiums to gold and climb higher in African athletics with sharper preparation and renewed resolve.
