Asante Kotoko solidified their position as the President’s Cup’s most successful club, winning their ninth title against Hearts of Oak on Sunday.
The Porcupine Warriors’ record-breaking win was a hard-fought victory, requiring a comeback against their biggest rivals.
Despite a dramatic match featuring a goalkeeping error, an own goal, a missed penalty, and a disallowed goal, the Porcupine Warriors persevered, extending their unbeaten streak against Hearts to six games.
Taking advantage of goalkeeper Mohamed Camara’s mistake, Hamza Issah scored the opening goal for Hearts of Oak in the first half.
Kotoko, however, fought back strongly in the second half. Konadu Yiadom, a defender for the Porcupine Warriors, accidentally scored an own goal, evening the score. Capitalizing on a defensive lapse, Kwame Opoku scored an easy goal, making the score 2-1 moments later.
Despite a late Hearts goal, which was ruled offside, fan protests erupted, leading to missiles being thrown onto the field. The potential shootout didn’t happen because Emmanuel Amankwah missed a penalty.
Kotoko’s Sunday victory gave them their ninth President’s Cup title.
With six President’s Cup trophies, Hearts of Oak holds the second place in the tournament’s history of success.
