After multiple defeats in New York, Aryna Sabalenka has finally won the US Open.
Following her comfortable win in the opening set, she went to tears at her loss to Coco Gauff in last year’s final.
In both 2022 and the previous year, she experienced disappointment in the semi-finals, relinquishing a 4-2 lead against Iga Swiatek and suffering a shocking defeat to Leylah Fernandez.
Despite everything, the 26-year-old declared herself to be “the happiest person in the world” following her 7-5 7-5 win over Jessica Pegula in the final, ultimately triumphing at Flushing Meadows.
“I’m speechless. I remember all the tough losses here,” Sabalenka said.
“They say you’re going to see the reason later. I see the reason right now.
“That’s why it’s extraordinary, because no matter what, every time I came back stronger, I was learning. I never let go of this dream.
