Chelsea’s Enzo Maresca is eager to play against his mentor, Manuel Pellegrini, whose Real Betis team reached the Conference League final. A Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall goal gave Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Djurgarden (5-1 aggregate), and Betis’s 4-3 aggregate win against Fiorentina required extra time. Maresca’s success has resulted in a match against a manager he’s known both as a player and a colleague—first as a player under Pellegrini at Malaga, then as his assistant at West Ham. Salford City takeover:
Salford City have been acquired by a new consortium led by David Beckham and Gary Neville that intends to “invest significantly” in the club. The new shareholders also include US-based businessman Declan Kelly and Lord Mervyn Davies, who will both serve as co-chairs of the League Two side’s board. Neville and Beckham were already co-owners at Salford alongside their former Class of ’92 Manchester United team-mates Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville, but they will no longer be shareholders although remain in roles at the club. Ethiopian Tilahun Nigussie won the Belfast Marathon in a new event record of two hours, 13 minutes and 37 seconds after dominating the race. Nigussie’s winning time cut four seconds off the previous race record set by his compatriot Negewo Ararisa in 2012. Kenya’s Millicent Kibet took victory in the women’s race in 2:38.30 which was more than three minutes outside the record set by another Kenyan Beatrice Jepkemei last year.
