Coventry City striker Brandon Thomas-Asante has been dropped from Ghana’s squad for the opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, just months after representing the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The forward has been left out of Carlos Queiroz’s latest 24-man selection for matches against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia following a difficult start to the new season at club level.
Thomas-Asante was part of Ghana’s World Cup squad and featured in the opening group match against Panama, coming off the bench in the second half and helping build to the winning goal in a 1-0 victory.
However, Queiroz has opted to reshape his attacking options for the September international window.
Antoine Semenyo, Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew, Ernest Nuamah, Prince Kwabena Adu, Ibrahim Osman and Christopher Bonsu Baah are among the selected attacking players.
Kudus returns after missing the World Cup through injury, while Ayew retains his place after captaining the Black Stars at the tournament.
Thomas-Asante was one of the new additions to Ghana’s World Cup squad and was handed the number 10 shirt for the competition.
His absence from the latest squad means the Coventry forward will look to regain form at club level as he seeks to return to Queiroz’s plans.
Ghana will open their qualifying campaign against Côte d’Ivoire on 24 September before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on 29 September.
The Black Stars will then travel to Morocco for a friendly against the Atlas Lions on 4 October.
