A total of 859 Colts clubs will compete across Ghana’s ten football regions in the 2026/27 season, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) investing millions of cedis in coaching, girls’ football and other grassroots development initiatives.
The GFA launched the new Colts Football season on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence in Prampram. President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku led the event.
Ashanti leads with 245 active Colts clubs, while Greater Accra has 216. This shows that grassroots football is still growing across Ghana.
This season is the sixth in a row since the GFA brought back and restructured Colts football in 2020.
The association has spent GH¢1.8 million in the last two seasons to train 600 Colts coaches through its CAF License D Coaching Program. This three-year project aims to train 900 coaches, with the last phase set to finish this year.
The GFA has set aside GH¢800,000 through the Regional Football Associations to run Elite U-15 Girls Regional Colts Leagues. This is part of its effort to give young female players more opportunities.
To help clubs save money, the GFA now offers free player registration and digital licences for up to 90 players per club. Referee fees have also been removed.
This season will also introduce the KIVO/JLAB U-17 Colts Inter-Club Championship and the first-ever GFA Colts Awards.
The association’s long-term goal is to create a clear path for talented young players to move from grassroots football to elite development programs, professional clubs, and Ghana’s national teams.
The GFA is asking clubs, coaches, scouts, referees, parents, and other stakeholders to work together so that young players across Ghana get the chances they need to grow their talent.
