Jeremy Jacquet announced his arrival at Liverpool with flair, helping the Reds cap off their pre-season with a confident 2-0 win over Como at Anfield.
The 21-year-old defender, a February arrival from Rennes, crowned his impressive debut by netting Liverpool’s second just before the break. Earlier, Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock and then turned creator for Jacquet’s memorable moment.
Gakpo teed up the French newcomer for an easy tap-in, doubling Liverpool’s lead. That goal was Jacquet’s parting gift before making way at halftime for fellow new signing Ronald Araujo.
After the interval, the tempo eased, and Como saw more of the ball, but Liverpool stayed calm and kept their two-goal cushion intact.
After letting a two-goal lead slip against Monaco last time out, the Reds made sure history did not repeat itself at Anfield. Ryan Gravenberch almost put the icing on the cake late on, only to be denied by the crossbar.
Gakpo and Jacquet shone brightest for Liverpool, with Jeremie Frimpong and Rio Ngumoha also catching the eye in this final dress rehearsal before the real action begins.
Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz had more subdued evenings. Both had scored against Monaco, but Isak faded after rattling the post early, and Wirtz never quite found his rhythm.
With pre-season in the rearview mirror, Liverpool now set their sights on the new campaign, kicking off next Sunday at St James’ Park.
