CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe praised Africa’s strong performance at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling the tournament a landmark for the continent.
He expressed confidence that an African nation will soon reach the final and ultimately win football’s top prize.
Speaking to the media in Johannesburg, Motsepe commended Africa’s representatives, noting that nine of the continent’s ten teams advanced beyond the group stage.
Ghana, Algeria, Côte d’Ivoire, and South Africa reached the Round of 32, while Egypt and Morocco advanced to the quarterfinals.
Motsepe attributed this success to the ongoing development of African football, highlighting improved structures, increased competitiveness, and the resilience of the continent’s teams.
He stated that these results demonstrate Africa now has at least ten national teams capable of competing with the world’s elite.
Reaffirming CAF’s long-term vision, Motsepe expressed his conviction that an African nation will soon reach a FIFA World Cup final and eventually win the trophy. He added that the 2026 achievements represent another important step toward this historic goal.
