No State Funds for 2026 World Cup Fan Travel – Mahama

John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will not spend public money to fly supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He pointed to high costs and advice from the Dzamepe Report as reasons for this decision.

At a fundraising event at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City Accra, Mahama said that even helping a small group of fans would cost a lot of money.

“The cost of flying and accommodating just 200 supporters is close to $2 million,” he said. He stressed that public money should be directed to pressing needs, such as creating jobs.

Because of this, Ghanaian fans who want to attend the tournament in the United States, Canada, or Mexico will need to find private sponsors or raise their own funds.

This decision follows the Dzamepe Report’s advice not to use state resources for fan travel.

Ghana is in Group L with England, Croatia, and Panama. The team will start their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto.
