Naana Jane praises UDS’s historic University World Cup win in China

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Vice President, has congratulated the UDS football team for their historic win at the 2025 University World Cup in Dalian, China.
The Vice President said on Sunday that the team’s victory was a source of pride for the university and Ghana.
“Your determination, teamwork, and resilience have lifted Ghana to the pinnacle of global university football. This victory is a triumph for UDS and the entire nation,” she said.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang said that the accomplishment should encourage young people nationwide to strive for excellence with passion and persistence. “Know that you have written your names in history and inspired young people across Ghana and beyond. Congratulations!” she remarked.
In a thrilling final, UDS defeated the defending champions, Paulista University of Brazil, 2-1, and set a new record. UDS is now the first African university to win the global tournament.
The Tamale university recovered after Brazil’s goal three minutes into the game. However, UDS showed determination, tying the score late and then winning in overtime.
Ibrahim Tanko’s team demonstrated discipline, talent, and tenacity, winning the tournament after an unbeaten group stage and victories over South Korea and Spain.
Following their gold medal victories at the Ghana and Africa University Games, this accomplishment solidifies UDS’s position as a football leader and a representation of African sports greatness.
