The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved Ghana’s match against Sudan to be held at Accra Sports Stadium this month.
This choice comes after the recent prohibition of the Baba Yara Stadium, which was considered unsuitable because of its inadequate playing field.
Over the weekend, CAF officials assessed the Accra and Cape Coast stadiums as potential venues for the match.
Following the inspection, CAF has granted conditional approval for the Accra Sports Stadium to host the game.
As stated in a letter to the GFA’s general secretary, the Accra Sports Stadium has received approval from CAF to host the AFCON Qualifiers for Morocco 2025. The scheduled match between Ghana and Sudan on October 11, 2024, will take place at this specific venue.
“In light of this approval, we kindly request that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the stadium management team prioritize the necessary enhancements to the pitch and other critical areas of the stadium leading up to the match day to ensure an optimal experience for both teams and the attending fans.
“Please note that CAF will continue to closely monitor the stadium’s readiness for this match and future CAF-sanctioned events.”
The last competitive Black Stars encounter at the Accra Sports Stadium was against Sao Tome and Principe three years ago. Since then, Cape Coast and Kumasi have hosted most big games”.
Ghana will play against Sudan at home on Friday, October 11, for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. Then, on Monday, October 14, Ghana will travel to Libya for the return leg.
The Black Stars began their qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium. Then, they drew 1-1 with Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Berkane, putting them in third place with only one point.
Otto Addo’s team will strive for six points against Sudan to eliminate their chances of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco.
Otto Addo, the Black Stars’ head coach, will announce his squad for the upcoming doubleheader against the Falcons later this week.
